Friendship Bench Pilot

Coming Soon…

What is the Friendship Bench?

The Friendship Bench is a mental health intervention that reduces isolation and improves mental well-being by creating safe, nonclinical spaces scattered throughout the community where individuals can sit and talk with a trained, compassionate, nonjudgmental “bench buddy” volunteer. Originally developed in Zimbabwe, the model has gained international recognition for its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety through simple human connection.

In our local pilot, the Friendship Benches will be located in a variety of public spaces, inviting individuals to engage with a volunteer listener. The pilot will include community listening sessions, extensive volunteer training, and direct outreach to target populations—such as seniors, young men, single mothers, Spanish speakers, and others. If the pilot demonstrates positive outcomes, we plan to scale the model across Ottawa County via the Mental Wellness Continuum.
